The new character of the Indonesian restoration movement

The new character of the Indonesian restoration movement

ALMOST 60 years ago, President Soekarno, in his speech at the State Palace, called for: create the character. For Bung Besar, the task of the revolution has not been completed as it has yet to build the nation from colonial decline to become a vibrant nation that can and is capable of meeting any challenge.

In the context of reflecting on the 10 years of the Indonesian Restoration Change Movement, the change agenda should always be linked to the spirit founding fathers and always diligently learn from all failures and setbacks due to our own mistakes.

During the 350 years of being a colonized nation, 32 years of being a nation chained by authoritarianism, and 23 years of pursuing reforms that have never been completed have been more than enough to grow this nation and rebuild the nation and its national character.

History of myopia

Many thinkers assert that the twenty-second century is the century of Asia, at least evidenced by the progress of Asia, especially India and China. Next, Indonesia, which has the 4th largest population in the world, should ideally be able to become a major player in the main arena of world civilization.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer in her novel Reverse flow already recalls the reversal of the flow of civilization from “south to north” to “north to south”. Our inability to manage our own strength must finally be paid for by the decline of civilization that takes hundreds of years to catch up.

Why do we never manage to manage ourselves? Because we forget our identity as indigenous people. What did the Europeans do when they experienced a revival?Renaissance) of the dark ages? They explore the noble values, scholarship, and traditions that developed in Greece, Rome, and even Arabia.

A great wave of culture swept through almost all of continental Europe in the 11th-13th centuries which was marked by a return to classical literature, the development of new arts and literatures, and the foundations of modern science began to be built with the birth of several universities, such as the Sorbonne in France, Bologna in Italy, Salamanca in Spain.

That the archipelago that we conceived as Indonesia in the past kept an unlimited treasure and a treasure of knowledge. The manuscripts, pupuh, temples and inscriptions inherited from the ancestors of the archipelago are information portals that will connect the contemporary indigenous generation to the classic scientific treasures of the archipelago.

The more strongly we connect with the nobility of our ancestors, the wider the panorama of our future. If Bung Karno is able to unearth the Pancasila of the archipelago, it is our duty as young people to draw deeper into the national spirit from the treasure of the archipelago’s history.

In this way, we avoid the myopia of history whose historical view is so short that it tarnishes our view of Indonesia’s identity in the future. In the future, Indonesia will have a young generation who will experience the latest trends in the latest technology, but will not be deprived of its identity as Bumiputra.

Didn’t the Meiji Restoration in Japan teach us that the political elite, bureaucracy, youth, intellectuals and the general public were able to combine the Tenno ideology with the application of science and technology Western women who were scientific thought and scientific knowledge.

Indonesia in the face of the challenges of the times

The rise of a nation always begins with a change / movement which is the colossal work of all elements of the nation. Whatever the pattern of change, be it reform, restoration or revolution.

When the world was rocked by the Spanish influenza pandemic in 1910, at the same time in the European hemisphere, World War I raged which brought about a new balance in the world political order. The COVID-19 pandemic that still rages around the world today can be a boost to rebuild the strength of the nation. The concept of Noto Nagoro, known as the idiom of national leadership, not only directs the arrangement in the political realm, but also organizes the pillars of economy, culture, including science and technology .

The current model of recruiting national leaders through liberal democracy has yet to be tested for its effectiveness in producing the ideal leadership model, namely the leadership model. god worship kawulo, or a leader who serves his people and has a strong orientation of human values.

However, the scene of power (politics) is not a scene devoid of pragmatic interests. Therefore, the new leadership, the leadership that shapes history, requires its own efforts to be able to reach the stage of power, and then use the existing power as a means to change the destiny of the people, change history and build a new civilization. .

Epilogue

The Restoration Movement is essentially a movement for change. Not only the exterior changes, but also the interior changes. Not only material, but also spiritual. The method of change must also be scientific, scientific and a problem solver. The Restoration Movement was not a crackling movement in the realm of rites and celebrations alone, let alone silence in the realm of culture and spirituality.

The Restoration Movement must be able to connect the two poles of time, the past and the future. The struggle is initiated in the present, properly managing one’s own strength. As a collective movement, the Restoration movement must also be visionary, forward-looking, and be a torch for the progress of the nation. Thus, this nation is no longer a “nation of coolies, and not of coolies among the nations”.

Enough colonialism, enough authoritarianism, enough myopia of history and myopia of the future. Welcome to the new Indonesia following the rebuilding of character and nation (nation and character rebuilding).
